People
Our aim is to demonstrate a responsible approach to the welfare
and well being of all our stakeholders – including our people,
suppliers, the communities and markets we operate in and the environment
as a whole.
From our earliest beginnings John W Hannay and Co Limited traditionally
has always had a strong sense of social responsibility. This is
reflected today in our values and behavior in how we operate as
a company and of how we respond to the genuine concerns of our stakeholders
irrespective of where they are, be it in the workplace, marketplace,
the countries we operate in and the wider environment in which we
live.
We as a company value and respect the people who work for us and
treat personal development as a priority. Specific training programs
are implemented to ensure our people are capable to carry out their
tasks competently and safely.
We recognise that stress in the workplace is commonplace and is
a concern to us. We therefore provide free and confidential counseling
to all employees who wish to use this service.
Regular monitoring of the make up of the people who work for us
is carried out and reported annually to top management. We take
harassment and discrimination very seriously and our management
are trained to ensure instances of this are identified and eradicated.
As part of personal development we endevour to promote from within

Environment
As a company involved in the recovery of waste for recycling we
take our responsibilities very seriously and re-use and recycle
our own waste thereby conserving valuable natural resources and
minimising waste to landfill.
We support the very essence of sustainable development and encourage
minimisation of the use of raw materials and promote the philosophy
of reduction, re-use and recycle.
• Energy
We monitor all vehicles used in the recovery of wastes to ensure
they are operating within current legislation and the set objectives
and targets . Vehicles are regularly serviced to ensure optimum
performance, fuel efficiency and minimisation of exhaust and noise
emissions.
Electricity usage is closely monitored and strict controls are
in place to reduce the energy used.
• Water
Water usage is continually monitored to ensure wastage
is strictly controlled. We have water screening plants and interceptors
in place at our depots that filter out impurities from the drainage
systems prior to entering the the foul water drains.
Water saving devices have been fitted in toilets that limit the
amount of water used to flush toilets.
• Materials
Legislation introduced in 1997 requires us to recover and
recycle a percentage of the packaging we use in our operations.
It is our policy to purchase packaging that can be recovered for
re-use or recycling reducing the use of raw materials.
• Waste Management
Our waste transfer stations are licensed in accordance with current
licensing regulations and receive regular inspections from the appropriate
agencies. The management staff at our transfer stations have all
been trained and certificated to the required level under the training
scheme organised by the Waste Management Industry Training and Advisory
Board (WAMITAB) and in accordance with the Waste Management Licensing
Regulations 1994.
It is our policy to carry out all of our activities in such a manner
to cause minimum impact on the environment. All employees receive
training designed for this very purpose.
• Objectives and Targets
As part of our progress towards accreditation to ISO 14001, environmental
objectives and targets for all aspects of our operation will be
set. The results of these objectives shall be made available to
all interested parties.

Health and Safety
Our primary concern is to create a healthy and safe working environment
for all of our employees and visitors through the implementation
of safe working systems that embrace the requirements of health
and safety legislation in force within the countries we operate.
Our Directors take an active role in health and safety and attend
our regular meetings.

Targets shall be set to reduce the amounts of dangerous substances
that we handle and these targets and results will be published here
on this web site.
We aim to reduce the number of reportable injuries in 2004 by 25%.
We will achieve this through extensive training and awareness programs
that are designed with the health and safety of operators in mind.
Suppliers
All plant and equipment is designed to operate to the highest possible
standards and also comply with current legislation.
We carry out regular supplier assessments and appraisals to ensure
our suppliers adhere to our purchasing requirements. We do not enter
into agreements with suppliers that will have a detrimental effect
on the environment.
Our suppliers are encouraged to be innovative and to supply alternative
goods that have significantly less impact on the environment and
reduce the risk to our employees.
All substances provided must be accompanied by the appropriate
data sheet that is retained in our COSHH Register and is made available
to all employees.
Communities
Monetary donations are provided to local charities and good causes
that benefit the local communities we operate in.
We also provide materials in the form of paper and board free of
charge to local schools and organisations for any initiatives they
may undertake.
Our management give regular briefings to local schools and organisations
who have an interest in the Environment.
The local communities we operate in is a valuable resource as we
employ most of our people from within these local communities.
We take enormous pride from the fact that as we continue to prosper
we bring prosperity in turn to the local communities and the country
as a whole.
