WEEE RECYCLING
The
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive sets
collection, recycling and recovery targets for all types of electrical
products with an implementation date of 1st June 2006.
This legislation was introduced to compel technology manufacturers
and retailers to dispose of this waste type safely. Many of these
items, including IT equipment and fluorescent tubes, are now categorised
under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005, and can no longer be
sent for disposal to be dumped at landfill sites.
Since all businesses use IT equipment in some way or another, the
Directive affects nearly every UK business, however many companies
believe this will either not apply to them or will not affect them.
It will.
A recent survey (Source: Lombard GATX Technology
report in Materials Recycling 22/10/2004) has found
that most businesses are still not aware of what the legislation
means and half of 250 IT managers surveyed said they were unprepared.
The cost of arranging for collection and recycling of any equipment
was estimated by three-quarters of the participants as being up
to 5% of their annual spending on IT.
The longer companies delay, the higher the cost will be. But despite the cost,
92% agreed that more must be done to divert IT waste from landfill and into the
recycling chain.
Hannay have developed WEEE recycling solutions. The WEEE collection
groupings (Category 1 - 10) have been
proposed to simplify collection and treatment arrangements, and
by listening to our customers we have been able to provide a unique
range of options designed to be relevant, simple, cost-effective
and compliant with all legislation.
Hannay's WEEE Solutions provide existing and new customers with
a safe and hassle free method for disposing of all their waste electrical
equipment.
For office clearouts, large and small, our Helping
Hand service is the simplest and safest solution. Our trained
operatives will call at your office and remove all mixed items.
In all cases we will arrange the necessary paperwork, including
Section 62 documentation and the Destruction/Recycling Certificates, thus
ensuring compliance.
To illustrate the flexibility of our solution, for larger quantities
we can supply our new WEEE recycling containers. These innovative
walk-in storage containers are purpose built for various types of
WEEE waste including fluorescent tubes, cables, PC monitors and
so on, whilst for smaller quantities of mixed items, like air fresheners,
office calculators and ink cartridges, for example, we provide lidded
HazSafe office boxes.
